# Take-home pay in every state, 2026

A single worker earning $100,000 in 2026 keeps $79,180 after taxes in 8 states and $72,025 in Oregon, the lowest of all 50 states and DC. That is a gap of $7,155 a year, or $596 a month, on the same salary. We ran our tax engine for every state at $50k, $75k, $100k and $150k for a single filer, plus a married couple earning $150,000.

## Key findings

- **Where a $100,000 earner keeps the most:** Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming, tied at $79,180. None of them takes income tax or payroll tax from wages.
- **Where they keep the least:** Oregon, at $72,025. State tax there is $7,155, or 26% of all the tax taken from the paycheck.
- **The gap grows with pay.** Between the best and worst state it is $3,211 at $50,000 and $12,805 at $150,000. The middle state at $100,000, Colorado, keeps $75,488, $3,692 less than the no-tax states.
- **The cheapest state with an income tax** at $100,000 is North Dakota, where state tax comes to $691 a year, about $58 a month.
- **No income tax is not always zero.** Washington withholds the WA Cares long-term care tax ($580 at $100,000), so it ranks below the states that take nothing.
- **At $50,000, 9 states take nothing**, North Dakota included: its income tax starts above that salary for a single filer.
- **Married couple, $150,000 combined, filing jointly:** $123,185 in the no-tax states and $112,485 in Oregon, a gap of $10,700.
- **Since 2025:** state tax on a $100,000 salary fell in 31 states and rose in 2. The largest cut is in South Carolina ($602 less); the largest rise is in California ($100 more).

## Take-home pay in all 50 states and DC

Yearly take-home pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and state taxes. Rank 1 keeps the most at $100,000; states with the same take-home share a rank. Select a column heading to sort.

State tax includes state payroll taxes withheld from wages. Want your own number? Use the [take-home pay calculator](/take-home-pay-calculator) or compare state income tax rates on the [state map](/states).

## Methodology

Each figure is the full-year tax on W-2 wages for a resident of the state in tax year 2026, computed with the same engine as our calculators. The salaries are round reference amounts, not average or median wages for any state.

- **Federal income tax** with the $16,100 standard deduction (single) or $32,200 (married filing jointly), no children, no other income and no itemized deductions.
- **Social Security** at 6.2% up to $184,500 of wages, and **Medicare** at 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single).
- **State income tax** with each state's 2026 brackets, deductions and exemptions, and **state payroll taxes** withheld from wages: CA State Disability Insurance (SDI) in California, MA Paid Family and Medical Leave in Massachusetts and WA Cares long-term care tax in Washington.
- No 401(k) or other pre-tax deductions. The married example is one household with $150,000 of combined wages.

**Not included:** city and county income taxes (17 states have them in some areas), property and sales taxes, cost of living, tax credits (no children are assumed), and the difference between paycheck withholding and the tax actually owed. Take-home pay here is what remains of the year's wages after the year's tax.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which state lets you keep the most of a $100,000 salary in 2026?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming tie at $79,180 a year for a single filer, because none of them takes income tax or a payroll tax from wages. Only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out.

### Which state takes the most from a $100,000 paycheck?

Oregon. A single filer there keeps $72,025, $7,155 less than in a state with no income tax. State tax is 26% of everything withheld at that salary.

### Does this include city and county income taxes?

No. Local income taxes vary by city and county, so the study leaves them out. 17 states have local income taxes in some areas; the state take-home pay calculators let you add them.

### Can I use these figures in an article?

Yes. Quote them with a link to this page. The suggested citation is under "How to cite". For another salary or filing status, use the take-home pay calculator or email contact@taxwren.com.
