9 states do not tax wages or self-employment income: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. Elsewhere, a single freelancer with $85,000 of 1099 profit pays a median $2,806 in state income tax, and the most in Oregon, Hawaii and Maine.
