## How 2026 income tax is calculated

1. **Add up your income:** wages, self-employment profit and other income such as interest.
2. **Subtract pre-tax contributions** such as a traditional 401(k), and half of any self-employment tax.
3. **Subtract the standard deduction:** $16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household.
4. **Apply the brackets** to what is left, from 10% to 37%. See the [2026 federal tax brackets](/federal-tax-brackets).
5. **Subtract credits** such as the child tax credit ($2,200 per child).
6. **Compare with withholding** to see your refund or balance due.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are the federal income tax brackets for 2026?

Seven rates from 10% to 37%. For single filers, 10% applies up to $12,400 of taxable income and 37% above $640,600. Each rate applies only to the income inside its bracket.

### How much federal income tax do I pay on $75,000?

A single filer with $75,000 of wages pays about $7,670 of federal income tax in 2026, after the $16,100 standard deduction. That is 10.2% of income, even though the top bracket reached is 22%.

### Will I get a tax refund?

You get a refund when the tax withheld from your paychecks (W-2 box 2) plus any estimated payments is more than the tax you owe for the year. Enter your withholding in the calculator to see your estimated refund or balance due.

### What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income (your top bracket). Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your income, which is always lower because the first slices of income are taxed at lower rates or not at all.
